The heat in Houston in August can be intense. In fact, the average temperature for the area is 94 degrees Fahrenheit during July and August, with September coming in at 89 degrees. With all this heat, it is important to check your home and business for proper insulation.
If your home is older, you may not have insulation in the walls. One way to check for this is to turn off the electricity (VERY important!) and remove the switch plate from a wall. Look to the side of the electrical box or remove it to see if there is insulation in the wall. If you cannot remove the electrical box and don’t have a very good view, try inserting a plastic hanger to see if you can pull any insulation out with the hook. Again, be sure that the electricity is turned off prior to doing this and use a device that does non-conductive.
Another method is to use a borescope. A borescope is a special tool with a tiny camera on one end, connected to a long, thin tube with a display screen on the opposite end. A borescope can be inserted next to the electrical box or can be placed inside the wall by making a small hole. You can get one on Amazon for less than $100. Alternatively, you can get an endoscope that attaches to your cell phone via USB cable and use your phone as the display screen. These options are much less expensive and can be used by simply downloading an app to your phone.
Of course you can always call the professionals at Energy Assault Solutions to come check your business or home’s insulation. Then, we can recommend the best method to ensure your property is insulated and protected against the summer heat.
