If you’ve ever built a home you probably know how stressful it can be. When it comes down to picking every tiny detail, building a house from scratch can seem downright impossible. Whether you’re already built your home, are still in the process, or are simply still considering, we’ve compiled a few things you NEED to think about while building.
1. LIGHTING LIGHTING LIGHTING
The amount of light that you let into your home determines more than just whether or not you can find your way around. And we don’t just mean installing more light fixtures. Install as many windows as you can into your new home, and then install %10 more. Natural light simply just makes humans happier. The sun should be the main source of light for your whole home. That saves you from having to use the extra electricity in the day, and will most likely improve your overall mood!
2. Only Build Rooms You KNOW You’ll Use
Have you ever bought your kid a toy only to watch them forget about it a week later? Building a new game room, workout room, or sewing room may SEEM like a good idea, but you need to focus on building the rooms that you’ll us every single day. Consider trying to make your rooms multipurpose! If you really need to be alone when you are sewing, maybe make the office into your personal sewing spot! The best gameroom is the gameroom that is also a media room and a guest room!
3. DON’T Cut That Down!
Have you ever seen that one house in the neighborhood that has nothing but newly planted trees growing in the front yard? If you can help it, don’t own that house. Working with the landscape that is already present is key when building a new home. These days, many small home owners forget to leave amply room for landscaping and any outdoor development. When you’re planning your first home build, try and work in some of the pre-existing landscape as well. That giant oak has been there a long longer than you have!
4. Listen to the Contractor, But Listen to Yourself!
Truth is, it is impossible for you to pay attention to every little detail when you’re building your home. Make sure to hire a highly recommended contractor who you can trust. AND when you do find the right one, TRUST THEM! If you’ve done the research and found the right builder, it’s time to listen to their advice and let them execute a carefully thought through plan. However, make sure you follow your gut! After all, it’s not the contractor who is going to be living in the house! Don’t budge on the things you know you want in your home, but make sure you abdicate the things that you aren’t sure on to the professionals.
